Rewinding Trent Dilferâs weekly UAB press conference
UAB head coach Trent Dilfer addresses the media Monday as the Blazers prepare to hit the road for the first time this season, traveling to face Georgia Southern, Saturday, Sept. 9, at Allen E. Paulson Stadium in Statesboro. Kickoff is scheduled for 5 p.m. CT on ESPN+.
Here is what Dilfer had to say in his weekly press conference.
— Dilfer opens his second game week press conference by speaking on UAB’s season-opening win. It was brief with Dilfer saying, “I’m not a big opening statement guy.”
— Dilfer was pleased with defensive adjustments and line-of-scrimmage control.
— Keondre Swoopes and Damon Miller will practice this week and their availability will be determined by their performance.
— Preparing for Georgia Southern is tough because of their “balance” within a high-volume passing offense.
— Dilfer looks for routine in his first away game and looks to use an NFL schedule in traveling the day before and remaining home to prepare more.
— Dilfer gives “credit to Jacob Zeno” for development and improvement during the offseason that resulted in the junior quarterback setting the UAB single-game completions record. Most of the successful NFL quarterbacks “operate and are surgical in the passing game,” according to Difler, who argues that Zeno managing a quick offense is just as tough as pinpoint accuracy downfield. Dilfer “believes it’s the right way to play.”
— Brennan Moran was impressive at left guard, in place of Luke Jones, and will continue to work at the position depending on the latter’s status. Jones will practice this week and his availability will be determined later.
— Dilfer gave his staff “49″ hours off this weekend after playing Thursday and the break was much needed after a strenuous fall camp.
— Damien Miller is listed as a linebacker this week and Dilfer likes his “versatility, leadership and capability of playing big and small.” Miller’s move is critical and allows more talent to make the field, along with being a “special, special player.”
